All 7 Methods Tested
1. Paper Towel + Plate Method
Fastest results. See taproot before planting. 90%+ success. Cheap. Controls moisture perfectly.
Transplant shock risk. Taproot breaks easy. Must check daily or roots grow into towel.
Steps:
- Wet paper towel — damp not soaking. No chlorine water.
- Place seeds 1in apart. Fold towel over.
- Put in ziplock or between two plates. Dark, 70-80°F.
- Check 24hrs. Plant when taproot ¼-½in long.
- Plant taproot DOWN in seedling soil, ½in deep.
2. Direct in Soil
Zero transplant shock. Most natural. Best for beginners. No handling taproot.
Slower. Can’t see if seed germinated. Overwater risk.
Steps:
- Use seedling mix or light soil. Solo cup with holes.
- Plant seed ½in deep, pointy end down.
- Water lightly. Dome or bag for humidity 70%.
- Heat mat at 75°F speeds germ.
- Sprout appears 3-7 days. Remove dome once up.
3. Rockwool Cubes
Perfect for hydro. pH stable. Easy transplant. Sterile.
Must pH soak cubes to 5.5 first. Can’t overwater. Fibers bad for lungs.
Steps:
- Soak cubes in pH 5.5 water 1hr. Drain.
- Insert seed ¼in deep in hole.
- Humidity dome, 75°F, dark until sprout.
- Light watering. Roots show in 3-5 days.
4. Water Glass 24hr Soak
Softens shell fast. See sinkers vs floaters. Good for old seeds.
Over 24hr = drowning risk. Must plant after soak. Floaters often still viable.
Steps:
- Cup of room temp water. Drop seeds.
- Dark, warm place 18-24hrs max.
- Seeds that sink are viable. Floaters tap to sink.
- Plant immediately in soil/rockwool after soak.
5. Rapid Rooter Plugs
Pre-holed. Good air/water ratio. Organic.
Expensive. Can dry out fast. Lower rate than rockwool.
6. Scarification + Paper Towel
Fastest for old/hard seeds. Breaks dormancy.
Easy to damage embryo. Overkill for fresh seeds. Advanced only.
Steps:
- Sandpaper in pill bottle. Shake 30sec to scuff shell.
- Then paper towel method.
7. Jiffy Peat Pellets
Cheap. Available everywhere.
Worst results. Inconsistent moisture. pH often off. Net restricts roots.
Winner: Paper Towel Method — Full Guide
Materials Needed
Paper towels 2 plates or ziplock Distilled water Tweezers
Perfect Execution
- Water: Use distilled or RO water. Tap chlorine kills. Room temp.
- Moisture: Towel should be damp like a wrung-out sponge. No puddles. Too wet = rot.
- Temp: 70-80°F ideal. 75°F = fastest. Use heat mat if room is cold.
- Darkness: Seeds germinate in dark. Light inhibits. Cover plates.
- Check: 24hrs first check. 48hrs most will have tails. 72hrs max — plant or they rot.
- Planting: Tweezers only. Taproot down. ½in deep. Don’t touch taproot — oils kill it.
7 Mistakes That Kill Seeds
1. Overwatering
#1 killer. Seed needs oxygen. Soggy towel/soil = no air = rot. Fix: Damp, not wet. Soil should clump but no water squeeze out.
2. Planting Too Deep
>1in deep = seedling runs out of energy before surface. Fix: ½in max. Use pencil eraser to make hole.
3. Cold Temps
<65°F = 2 week germ or fail. Fix: Heat mat. 75-80°F cuts time in half.
4. Touching Taproot
Skin oils + bacteria kill taproot. Fix: Sterile tweezers only. If you touch it, 50% death rate.
5. Old/Weak Seeds
Seeds >3 years old drop 20% viability per year. Fix: Store in fridge, airtight, dark. Test germ before full run.
6. Chlorine Water
Tap water chlorine kills microbes + embryo. Fix: Let tap sit 24hrs to off-gas, or use distilled.
Germination FAQ
How long until I give up on a seed?
Fresh seeds: 7 days max. Old seeds: 14 days. After that, it’s dead or dormant. Crack it — if white inside, was viable. If brown/mush, dead.
Should I germinate in the dark?
Yes. Light inhibits germination. Seeds sprout underground naturally. Once cotyledons pop, need light immediately or stretch.
Floaters vs sinkers in water glass?
Myth that floaters are bad. Fresh seeds float due to air pocket. Tap them — if they sink after 24hr, viable. If still floating after 48hr, probably dead.
Can I plant seed directly in final pot?
Yes for autos. Photos better in solo cup first — easier to control water. Direct to 5gal = overwater risk for seedling.
Heat mat necessary?
If room <70°F, yes. Cuts germ time from 7 days to 2-3 days. Must use thermostat — >85°F cooks seeds.
