Hash Making Methods
Every technique from dry sift to live rosin. Yields, grades, step-by-step guides, and what equipment you actually need.
Hash Basics: What Is Hash?
Hash = concentrated trichome heads separated from plant material. Trichomes contain 90%+ of the cannabinoids and terpenes. The goal: collect heads, leave leaf.
Trichome Head Sizes
| Micron | What It Catches | Quality |
|---|---|---|
| 220-190 | Plant material, contaminants | 1★ Food grade |
| 160-120 | Large heads, some stalks | 3★ Half-melt |
| 90-73 | Perfect mature heads | 6★ Full-melt |
| 45-25 | Small/immature heads | 4★ Good melt |
| 25-0 | Dust, broken stalks | 2★ Low grade |
Solventless Methods — No Chemicals
1. Dry Sift / Kief
Difficulty
BeginnerSimplest method. No water, no solvents.
Yield
5-15%100g flower = 5-15g kief
Quality
2★ to 5★Depends on screen quality
Steps:
- Freeze material 24hrs — brittle trichomes break off easier
- Rub over 150-200 micron screen or trim bin
- Collect kief underneath. Static tech with paint roller = cleaner
- Press with hair straightener + parchment for rosin, or smoke as-is
2. Ice Water Hash / Bubble Hash
Difficulty
IntermediateNeed bags, ice, water, space
Yield
10-20%100g flower = 10-20g hash
Quality
3★ to 6★Best solventless method
Steps:
- Layer bags: 220, 160, 120, 90, 73, 45, 25 micron in bucket
- Add ice + water + frozen material. Water temp 32-34°F
- Agitate gently 10-15min. Don't beat it — breaks plant matter
- Pull bags, collect hash from each. 90-73u is the money bag
- Sieve onto parchment. Dry 7-14 days at 60°F/60%RH
- Press into temple balls or smoke as-is
3. Dry Ice Hash
Difficulty
EasyFaster than water hash
Yield
15-25%Higher yield, lower quality
Quality
2★ to 4★More plant matter contamination
Steps:
- Add dry ice + material to 220u bag in bucket
- Shake 2-3min over mirror or parchment
- Stop when it turns green — that’s plant matter
- Scrape and jar. No drying needed
4. Rosin — Flower & Hash
Difficulty
IntermediateNeed press $300-$2000
Yield
15-25% flower60-80% hash
100g flower = 15-25g rosin
Quality
4★ to 6★Live rosin = top tier
Flower Rosin Steps:
- Use 62% RH flower. Too dry = low yield
- Pre-press into puck, bag in 90-120u rosin bag
- Press: 180-220°F, 60-120 seconds, slow pressure ramp
- Collect. Cold cure in jar 3-7 days for batter
Hash Rosin Steps:
- Use 90-73u bubble hash only
- Double bag: 37u inside 160u
- Press: 150-180°F, 60-90 seconds
- 6★ full-melt hash rosin result
Solvent Methods — Higher Yield, Requires Safety
5. BHO — Butane Hash Oil
Difficulty
AdvancedClosed-loop system required
Yield
15-30%Highest yield method
Quality
4★ to 6★Live resin = 6★
Process: Blast frozen material with n-butane/propane mix → collect in closed loop → purge in vac oven 24-72hrs at 90°F → shatter, budder, or sauce.
Live Resin: Same process but use fresh frozen material not dried. Preserves terps. Smells like live plant.
6. Ethanol / QWET
Difficulty
IntermediateSafer than butane
Yield
10-20%Quality
3★ to 5★Dark if not winterized
Quick Wash Ethanol (QWET):
- Freeze material + 190-proof ethanol 24hrs
- Combine 3min, shake gently. Longer = more chlorophyll
- Filter through coffee filter
- Evaporate ethanol: double boiler or source turbo OUTDOORS
- Purge remaining solvent in vac oven
7. CO2 Oil
Difficulty: Pro / Commercial — $50k+ equipment
Process: Supercritical CO2 strips cannabinoids/terps. Clean but strips terps unless added back. Used for carts/distillate.
Hash Grades & Yield Chart
| Method | Yield from 100g Flower | Quality | Cost | Best Use |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Dry Sift | 5-15g | 3★ | $20 screens | Rosin, joints |
| Bubble Hash | 10-20g | 5★ | $100 bags | Smoke, rosin, temple balls |
| Dry Ice | 15-25g | 3★ | $30 | Edibles, quick |
| Flower Rosin | 15-25g | 4★ | $300+ press | Dabs |
| Hash Rosin | 60-80% of hash | 6★ | $300+ press + bags | Top-shelf dabs |
| BHO/Live Resin | 15-30g | 5★ | $2k+ system | Dabs, carts |
| QWET | 10-20g | 4★ | $100 | Edibles, tincture |
6★ Full-melt: Bubbles, no residue, dab straight
5★ Half-melt: Some residue, great for rosin
4★ Good: Burns, not dab-friendly
3★ Food grade: Edibles, joints only
2★ Cooking: Lots of plant matter
Storage & Pressing
Storage
Bubble/Dry Sift: Glass jar, cool dark place. 60°F ideal. Oxygen + heat degrade THC→CBN. Freezer for long term — prevents grease.
Rosin/BHO: Glass jar or parchment in fridge. Terps evaporate above 70°F. Freeze for 6mo+ storage.
Pressing Temple Balls
- Put bubble hash in turkey bag
- Roll with hot wine bottle 10min
- Heat + pressure = oils release, binds heads
- Roll into ball. Cures for months like wine
Hash FAQ
Why is my bubble hash dark?
Oxidation, too much agitation, old material, or plant matter contamination. Fresh frozen = lighter. 90-73u should be blonde. Dark = 160u or old trim.
How do I test if hash is full-melt?
Heat a nail, drop tiny piece. If it bubbles and melts to oil with no residue = 6★. If it chars and leaves ash = 3★ or lower.
Can I make hash from trim?
Yes. Sugar leaf trim works great. Fan leaves have no trichomes — waste of time. Freeze trim immediately after harvest.
Why does my rosin taste burnt?
Temp too high or pressed too long. Flower rosin: 190-210°F max. Hash rosin: 150-170°F max. Over 220°F = burnt lipids.
What’s the difference between live resin and live rosin?
Live Resin: BHO extraction from fresh frozen. Solvent-based.
Live Rosin: Ice water hash from fresh frozen, then pressed. Solventless. Live rosin is top tier.
