Living Soil Recipes for Terpene Boost
Stop growing mids. These 5 soil mixes increase terpenes 20-40% vs bottled nutes. Feed the soil, not the plant.
Why Living Soil = More Terps
Bottled nutes feed plants directly. Living soil feeds microbes, fungi, and bacteria. They break down organic matter and feed the plant on demand. This symbiotic relationship triggers higher essential oil production.
The Terpene Boost Formula
Base Soil + Minerals + Microbes + Carbon + Time = Terps
You need: aeration, water retention, minerals for enzyme production, fungal networks for nutrient delivery, and 2-4 weeks cook time for microbes to activate.
5 Core Living Soil Recipes
All recipes are per cubic foot = 7.5 gallons. 1 cubic foot fills a 7gal fabric pot. Multiply for larger batches.
1. Coots Mix - The Standard
Best Overall Terp Boost
Created by Clackamas Coot. Most tested recipe. Balanced for veg + flower.
Terp targets: Myrcene, Caryophyllene, Humulene — earthy, spicy profiles. Kelp + crab = cytokinin boost = bigger trichomes.
2. BuildASoil 3.0 Style
Premium No Cook
Commercial mix. Plant same day. Heavy mineral diversity.
Terp targets: Limonene, Pinene, Terpinolene — bright, citrus, pine. Malted barley = enzyme boost.
3. Super Soil - Subcool’s Mix
Hot Water Only
Heavy amendment load. Layer in bottom 1/3 of pot. Veg in light mix on top.
Terp targets: Myrcene, Linalool — heavy, sedating. Guano = P boost for flower. Long cook = no burn.
4. No-Till Minimal Mix
Reusable Cheap
For 15gal+ beds. Re-amend between cycles. Mulch + cover crop.
Terp targets: Balanced. Cover crop + worms = fungal dominance = terp complexity. Reuse 5+ cycles.
5. High Brix Terp Boost Mix
Advanced Max Terps
Calcium-heavy for high brix sap. Foliar feed calcium. Terps = plant sugars.
Terp targets: All terps boosted. Calcium + sulfur = enzyme cofactors for terpene synthesis. High brix = high flavor.
Terpene-Specific Amendments
Add these in flower to push specific terpene profiles. Top dress week 1 and week 4 of flower.
| Amendment | Target Terpene | Rate per CF | When to Use |
|---|---|---|---|
| Kelp Meal | All terps - Cytokinins | ¼-½ cup | Week 1-6 flower |
| Blackstrap Molasses | Myrcene, Linalool | 1 tbsp/gal tea | Weeks 3-8 flower |
| Sulfur - Gypsum/Epsom | Thiols, Gas | ½ cup gypsum | Mixed in soil, not top dress |
| Malted Barley | Limonene, Pinene | ¼ cup ground | Week 2 + 5 flower top dress |
| Neem/Karanja Cake | Terpinolene, Ocimene | ¼ cup | Week 1 flower - pest + terps |
| Crustacean Meal | Caryophyllene | ½ cup | Base mix - chitin boost |
| Alfalfa Meal | Linalool, Floral | ¼ cup | Week 1-3 flower triacontanol |
| Bat Guano High-P | Myrcene, Caryophyllene | ¼ cup | Week 4-6 flower only |
Compost Tea Recipes for Terps
Veg Tea - Microbe Boost
Brew 24hrs: 5gal water + 2 cups EWC + 2 tbsp molasses + 1 tbsp kelp. Aerate. Apply weekly. Goal: Bacteria for N cycling.
Flower Tea - Terp Boost Weeks 2-6
Brew 36-48hrs: 5gal water + 1 cup EWC + 1 cup compost + 2 tbsp molasses + 1 tbsp kelp + 1 tbsp alfalfa + 1 tsp humic acid. Aerate. Goal: Fungi + enzymes. Apply every 10 days.
Carb Load Tea - Weeks 5-7
No brew: 1gal water + 1 tbsp molasses + 1 tsp yucca. Water in. Goal: Feed microbes, boost brix, increase resin. No N.

Living Soil FAQ
Do I pH living soil water?
If your water is 6.0-7.0, no. Microbes buffer pH. If >7.5 or <6.0, use citric acid or lime to adjust. Never use pH up/down — kills microbes.
How long to cook soil?
Minimum 2 weeks for microbe activation. 4 weeks ideal. You can plant same day with BuildASoil 3.0, but terps improve after 30 days cook.
Can I reuse living soil?
Yes. That’s the point. Dump pot, remove roots, re-amend with ½ cup kelp + neem + 2 cups EWC per CF. Cook 2 weeks. Gets better each cycle.
Why are my terps low in living soil?
1. Overwatering — anaerobic = no terps. 2. Too much N in flower. 3. No cook time. 4. Genetics. 5. Harvested too early. Fix water + fade harder.
Cover crop or mulch?
Both. Clover cover crop = N fixation. Barley straw mulch = moisture retention + fungal food. Chop cover crop week 2 flower.
