Trellising Techniques: Scrog vs Sog vs Mainlining

Trellising Techniques: Scrog vs SOG vs Mainlining

Stop growing Christmas trees. Train for flat canopies, even light, and 2-3x yield. Pick the method that fits your space.

Why Trellis? The Problem

Natural cannabis grows apical dominant: One main cola gets 80% of light. Lower branches get 20%. Result: 1 big bud, 15g of larf popcorn. Trellising forces horizontal growth = even light = all buds are colas.

Without Training

Result: 1 main cola, popcorn below. 1g/watt average.

With Training

Result: 8-16 even colas. All get light. 2-3g/watt possible.

SCROG: Screen of Green

Best for: 1-4 plants, maximize yield per plant, 3x3 to 5x5 tents

How It Works

Install net 8-12" above pots. Veg until plant hits net. Tuck/weave branches horizontally through net holes. Flip to flower when 70% of net is full. Each square becomes a cola.

SCROG Timeline

  1. Week 1-4 Veg: Top at node 5. Grow 6-8 main branches.
  2. Week 4-6 Veg: Install screen. Tuck branches horizontally. Fill 70% of screen.
  3. Flip to 12/12: Continue tucking through stretch weeks 1-2.
  4. Week 3 Flower: Stop tucking. Defoliate below screen. Let colas grow up.
  5. Week 4-9: Maintain. Only remove leaves blocking bud sites.

SCROG Specs

MetricValue
Plants per 4x41-4 plants
Veg time6-10 weeks
Screen height8-12" above pot
Hole size2-3" squares
Fill before flip70% of screen
Yield1.5-2.5g/watt

Pro: Max yield per plant Pro: Even canopy Pro: Few plants to manage

Con: Long veg time Con: Can't move plants Con: Labor intensive tucking

SCROG mistake: Flipping too early with 30% screen fill = wasted space. Flipping too late at 100% = overgrown, can't tuck stretch. Flip at 70%. Stretch fills last 30%.

SOG: Sea of Green

Best for: Many plants, fast turnover, commercial, clones only

How It Works

Grow many small plants, 1-4 per sq ft. Minimal veg, 1-2 weeks. Flip fast. Each plant makes 1 main cola. No training, no topping. Sea of single colas. Fastest seed-to-harvest.

SOG Timeline

  1. Week 1-2 Veg: Root clones in 4" pots. No topping. Let grow 12-16" tall.
  2. Flip to 12/12: Pack 4-9 plants per sq ft. 36-64 plants in 4x4.
  3. Week 1-3 Flower: Stretch. Remove lower branches. Keep only top.
  4. Week 4-8: Minimal defol. Support if needed. Harvest 8-9 weeks.

SOG Specs

MetricValue
Plants per 4x416-64 plants
Veg time1-2 weeks
Pot size0.5-1 gal
Height at flip12-16"
Yield per plant0.5-1.5 oz
Total yield1.5-2g/watt

Pro: Fastest cycle Pro: No training labor Pro: Perpetual harvest

Con: Many plants = legal risk Con: Clone required Con: Lower yield per plant

SOG warning: 64 plants in 4x4 is illegal in most states. Check plant count limits. SOG is for commercial licensed grows. Home growers: use 4-9 plants max.

Mainlining / Manifolding

Best for: 1-2 plants, maximum control, symmetrical colas, photoperiod only

How It Works

Top plant at node 3. Keep only nodes 1+3 or 2+4. Remove everything else. Top those 2 branches again. Repeat until 8-16 even colas. Creates perfect manifold. All colas equal distance from roots = equal size.

Mainlining Timeline

  1. Week 3 Veg: Top at 3rd node. Remove nodes 1-2. Keep node 3.
  2. Week 4: Node 3 grows 2 mains. Tie down horizontal.
  3. Week 5: Top both mains at 3rd node again. Now 4 mains.
  4. Week 6-7: Top all 4 mains once more = 8 colas. Or top again = 16 colas.
  5. Week 8-10: Veg until 8-16 tops are 12" tall. Defol below manifold.
  6. Flip: Stretch fills canopy. All colas same height.

Mainlining Specs

MetricValue
Plants per 4x41-2 plants
Veg time8-12 weeks
Final colas8, 16, or 32
Height at flip12-18"
Yield2-3g/watt

Pro: Perfect symmetry Pro: All colas equal Pro: Highest quality

Con: Longest veg Con: High stress Con: Not for autos

Mainlining mistake: Topping too early or too often. Plant needs 3 weeks recovery between tops. Rush it = stunted plant. 16 colas takes 10-12 weeks veg. Don't mainline autos — they'll flower mid-training.

Which Method Should You Use?

Choose SCROG If:

  • You have 1-4 plants in 3x3 to 5x5 tent
  • Plant count limits matter (legal)
  • You want max yield per plant
  • You have 8-10 weeks for veg
  • You're beginner to intermediate
  • You want even canopy without complexity

Choose SOG If:

  • You have unlimited clones
  • Plant count doesn't matter (legal/commercial)
  • You want fastest seed-to-harvest
  • You run perpetual harvests
  • You don't mind tending 16-64 plants
  • You're growing for production not quality

Choose Mainlining If:

  • You have 1-2 plants max
  • Plant count is strictly limited
  • You want absolute max yield/quality per plant
  • You have 10-12 weeks for veg
  • You're advanced and patient
  • You want perfect symmetry and bag appeal
For most home growers: SCROG 1-2 plants in 4x4. Best balance of yield, time, and plant count. SOG if you're commercial. Mainlining if you have 1 plant limit and 3 months to veg.
Hybrid approach: Many growers top once, then SCROG. Or mainline to 8 colas then SCROG. You can mix methods. Just don't SCROG + SOG — pick one structure.

SCROG = few plants, long veg, max yield. SOG = many plants, fast, commercial. Mainline = 1 plant, longest veg, perfect colas.
