When temperatures climb above 90°F (32°C), cannabis plants experience significant stress. Heat can reduce terpene production, slow growth, cause nutrient lockout, increase pest pressure, and in severe cases lead to hermaphroditism or plant death. Whether your home grow is indoors or outdoors, a few targeted adjustments during a heat wave can protect your plants and preserve the quality you’re working toward for your edibles.
Temperature Management
- Indoor grows: Aim to keep daytime temps between 75–82°F (24–28°C) and nighttime temps 10°F cooler if possible. Use exhaust fans, intake fans, and oscillating fans to move air. Consider portable AC units, swamp coolers, or redirecting AC vents into the grow space during extreme heat.
- LED vs HPS: LEDs produce less heat than older HPS lights. If using HPS, raise lights or dim them during peak heat hours.
- Outdoor grows: Provide afternoon shade with 30–50% shade cloth, especially during the hottest part of the day (usually 1–5 pm). Move potted plants to shaded areas or use temporary shade structures.
- Root zone cooling: Heat stress often starts at the roots. Use light-colored pots, elevate containers off hot surfaces, or water with slightly cooler water in the early morning.
Watering and Humidity Control
- Water more frequently but carefully: Plants use more water in heat, but overwatering in hot conditions can lead to root rot. Check soil moisture 1–2 inches down before watering.
- Water early morning or late evening: This reduces evaporation and prevents leaf burn from water droplets acting like magnifying glasses in strong sun.
- Humidity balance: High heat + high humidity increases mold and mildew risk. High heat + low humidity increases transpiration stress. Use a hygrometer and aim for 40–60% RH during veg and slightly lower in flower.
- Mulch for outdoor plants: A layer of mulch helps retain soil moisture and keeps root zones cooler.
Nutrient and Environmental Adjustments
- Reduce nutrient strength slightly: Heat-stressed plants often take up nutrients more slowly. A slightly lighter feeding schedule can prevent burn.
- Watch pH: Heat can affect nutrient availability. Keep pH in the optimal range (5.8–6.2 for hydro/coco, 6.0–7.0 for soil).
- Calcium and magnesium: Heat increases transpiration, which can lead to Ca/Mg deficiencies. Consider a light supplement if you see spotting or yellowing between veins.
- Avoid major changes: Heat is already stressful — avoid transplanting, heavy pruning, or big nutrient swings during extreme temperatures.
Monitoring, Signs of Stress, and Emergency Steps
- Watch for wilting, leaf cupping, or yellowing: These are early signs of heat stress. Wilting that doesn’t recover overnight is a red flag.
- Check for pests: Heat brings spider mites, thrips, and aphids. Inspect undersides of leaves daily.
- Flower stage caution: High heat during flowering can reduce terpene and cannabinoid production and increase the chance of hermaphroditism. Prioritize cooling the canopy and root zone.
- Emergency cooling: If plants are severely stressed, move them to the coolest shaded spot available, give a light watering with pH-balanced water, and increase airflow immediately. Mist leaves lightly (early or late in the day) for quick relief.
- Recovery: Once temperatures drop, plants usually bounce back within a few days if stress wasn’t prolonged.
Extreme heat is temporary, but the way you manage it directly affects the quality of your final product. Keeping plants comfortable preserves terpenes, resin production, and overall plant health — all of which matter when you’re growing for gourmet edibles. A few simple adjustments during these hot days can make a big difference in your harvest.
