Cannabis Cooking
on a Budget
The cheapest tools and methods that still deliver strong, consistent edibles.
You Don’t Need Expensive Gear
High-end devices like the Magical Butter Machine or sous vide setups make the process easier and more consistent, but they are not required for good results. With basic kitchen items and careful technique, you can make potent, reliable edibles for very little money.
The two most important steps are still decarboxylation and infusion. Focus your limited budget on doing those well.
Bare-Bones Tool Kit (Under $25 Total)
- • Baking sheet + parchment paper or aluminum foil (\~$3–5)
- • Oven thermometer (highly recommended, \~$8–12)
- • Small saucepan + heat-safe bowl for double boiler (\~$8)
- • Cheesecloth or coffee filters for straining (\~$3)
- • Mason jars or clean glass jars (\~$5 for a pack)
- • Wooden spoon or spatula
- • Cheap digital kitchen scale (\~$10) – for accurate dosing
- • Fine mesh strainer (\~$5)
- • Small funnel
- • Old coffee grinder or mortar & pestle (if you don’t have one)
Total starter kit can easily stay under $25 if you already own basic kitchen items.
Budget Decarboxylation
This is the most important step. Skip it or do it poorly and your edibles will be weak.
- 1. Preheat oven to 240–250°F (use an oven thermometer — most ovens are inaccurate).
- 2. Break cannabis into small pieces (pea-sized) and spread evenly on parchment-lined baking sheet.
- 3. Bake 30–40 minutes, stirring once halfway.
- 4. Let cool completely before using.
Cost: Basically free if you already have an oven and baking sheet.
An oven thermometer is the single best cheap upgrade you can make. It dramatically improves consistency.
Budget Infusion Methods
Use a small saucepan with a heat-safe bowl on top. Add decarbed cannabis + coconut oil or butter. Heat on low for 2–4 hours, stirring occasionally. Never let it boil or exceed \~200°F.
Coconut oil is usually the cheapest and most effective fat for edibles.
Add cannabis + oil to the slow cooker on the “warm” or lowest setting for 4–8 hours. Very hands-off and forgiving.
If you already own one, this is one of the easiest budget methods.
Strain through cheesecloth or a coffee filter into a clean jar. Squeeze well to get every drop of infused oil.
Tips for Best Results on a Budget
- Use coconut oil — It has a high fat content and absorbs cannabinoids well. It’s usually cheaper than butter per ounce and stays liquid at room temperature.
- Longer, lower heat — 2–4 hours on low heat is better than rushing it. Patience costs nothing.
- Grind consistently — A cheap manual grinder or even two spoons works fine. Even particle size = better extraction.
- Store properly — Keep infused oil in a dark glass jar in the fridge or freezer. It lasts months.
- Start low, go slow — Budget batches can be very potent. Test small amounts first.
- Make simple edibles — Mix infused oil into boxed brownie mix, cookies, or even just put it in coffee/tea. No fancy recipes needed.
What You Can Safely Skip
These are nice but not necessary when money is tight:
- • Magical Butter Machine or similar (\~$150+)
- • Sous vide machine
- • Expensive lecithin (optional but not required for basic recipes)
- • Fancy silicone molds (use ice cube trays or just make oil and dose by the spoonful)
- • Digital temperature probes beyond a basic oven thermometer
