Curing is the controlled aging step that happens after drying, and it is the reason two batches from the same harvest can taste completely different. Drying removes most of the surface moisture, while curing balances internal moisture, allows chlorophyll to break down more gradually, and helps preserve volatile compounds that affect aroma. When curing is rushed or skipped, the result is commonly reported as harsh, grassy, or uneven, which carries directly into the flavor of homemade edibles.


The core mechanism of curing is moisture equalization in a sealed environment with periodic air exchange. After initial drying, flower commonly retains internal moisture even when the outside feels dry. By placing material in a sealed glass container and opening the container briefly at intervals, commonly called burping, you release moist air and allow fresh air to enter. Over time the relative humidity inside the jar stabilizes. Many home and commercial practices aim for a stable range of 58 percent to 62 percent relative humidity inside curing containers. This range is commonly reported to help preserve aroma while reducing the chance of mold growth compared to higher humidity. Keeping relative humidity below about 65 percent is commonly reported as an important threshold for mold prevention.


Temperature during curing also matters. Commonly reported best practice is to cure in a cool dark place, with ambient temperatures around 60 to 70 degrees Fahrenheit, which is about 15 to 21 degrees Celsius, and away from direct light. Light, especially ultraviolet light, can degrade cannabinoids over time. THC can convert to CBN with prolonged exposure to light, heat, and oxygen, and CBN is commonly associated with more sedating effects in cultivation literature. Opaque containers and dark storage help slow this process.


Burping frequency is often highest in the first week and then decreases. A commonly reported schedule is to open jars once or twice daily for 10 to 15 minutes during days 1 to 7 of curing, then once daily during days 8 to 14, then every few days after that if humidity is stable and no condensation is visible. During each burp, check for condensation on the glass, unusual odors that suggest microbial growth, and whether the material clumps together or feels damp. If condensation is present, leave the jar open longer and consider removing material to dry slightly before resealing. Logging these observations helps you repeat a successful process. At minimum log date, day of cure, relative humidity reading from a small hygrometer, temperature, burp time, and aroma notes.


Chlorophyll breakdown during curing affects taste. Chlorophyll is the green pigment in plants, and when it remains in high amounts, it can contribute a bitter or grassy flavor. Slow curing allows for more gradual enzymatic breakdown of chlorophyll and other compounds compared to rapid drying at high heat. This is why low and slow is commonly recommended for flavor focused production.


Terpene preservation is another reason curing is important for edibles, even though edibles are heated again during infusion. Terpenes are aromatic compounds that are volatile and can be lost at relatively low temperatures. Common culinary herbs show the same principle, where gentle handling preserves aroma better than high heat. While many terpenes have boiling points above 300 degrees Fahrenheit, which is about 149 degrees Celsius, they can still evaporate at lower temperatures over time, especially with air movement and heat. A cool, sealed cure with minimal handling is commonly reported to retain more of these aromatic compounds than leaving material exposed to warm air.


For consistent edible production, weigh and document your curing process the same way you document dosing math. Use calibrated hygrometers in each jar, as shown in the photo, and replace or calibrate them periodically. Keep jars no more than about three quarters full to allow air circulation. Use clean glass jars with airtight seals, and avoid plastic containers for long term curing because they can affect aroma. Label each jar with start date, cultivar name if known, and target humidity range. Keep a separate curing log notebook that records humidity, temperature, and actions taken, as shown in the detailed log in the photo.


Curing time varies, but commonly reported minimums are 2 to 4 weeks for noticeable improvement in smoothness, with many practices extending to 4 to 8 weeks for fuller development. Longer cures beyond 8 weeks are also practiced by some, but benefits beyond that point vary by cultivar and storage conditions. Regardless of duration, the goal is a stable internal humidity, no condensation, and a consistent aroma that is not sharp or hay like.


When you move from cured flower to infusion, your dosing estimates remain estimates unless you have laboratory testing. Laboratory reports commonly calculate total THC using the formula total THC equals THC plus THCA multiplied by 0.877. The 0.877 factor accounts for molecular weight lost as carbon dioxide during decarboxylation. To estimate potential THC before infusion loss, many educational resources use grams of material multiplied by THCA percentage as a decimal multiplied by 1000 multiplied by 0.877 equals milligrams of potential THC, then divide by number of servings. This is an educational estimate only. Only lab testing can confirm actual milligrams per serving because moisture content, decarboxylation efficiency, and infusion efficiency all vary.


Store cured material and finished edibles with the same preservation principles. Use opaque, child resistant containers that require push and turn or have a child resistant zipper feature, store in a cool dark place, minimize air inside the container, and label with date made, estimated milligrams per serving, and ingredients including common allergens.
