Terpenes are not just smell. They are pharmacologically active volatile hydrocarbons that modulate how cannabinoids behave, how your body absorbs them, and what peripheral receptors they hit.
What Terpenes Are Chemically
Terpenes are built from isoprene units C5H8. Monoterpenes C10 are two isoprene units. Sesquiterpenes C15 are three. They are highly volatile, evaporate at low temperatures, and are the reason fresh flower smells stronger than old, terpenes have evaporated.
The cannabis plant makes over 150 terpenes. Five dominate most chemovars.
Myrcene - C10H16 - Earthy, Musky, Clove, Mango, Hops
Myrcene is the most abundant terpene in modern commercial cannabis. Also found in mango, hops, lemongrass, bay.
Aroma is earthy, musky, herbal, with clove spice.
Effects and mechanism: Often described as relaxing, sedative, and sleep aid. Myrcene is a potent analgesic and anti-inflammatory in animal models via alpha-2 adrenergic receptor and prostaglandin inhibition. It increases cell membrane permeability, which may increase THC absorption across blood-brain barrier. Traditional lore of eating mango before cannabis to increase effect comes from myrcene content in mango. Also inhibits CYP2C9, which could slow THC metabolism and extend duration. Not a CB1 binder directly.

Limonene - C10H16 - Citrus, Lemon, Orange
Second most common. Two enantiomers: D-limonene citrus orange, L-limonene piney. Cannabis contains mostly D-limonene. Also in lemon peel, citrus fruits.
Aroma is bright citrus lemon orange fresh.
Effects and mechanism: Mood boost, stress relief, uplifting. Limonene is rapidly absorbed and crosses blood-brain barrier. Increases serotonin and dopamine in prefrontal cortex in animal models. Strong anxiolytic via 5-HT1A and adenosine A2A receptors. Antifungal and antibacterial. Inhibits FAAH, raising anandamide levels indirectly. Promotes percutaneous absorption.

Linalool - C10H18O - Floral, Lavender, Sweet
Monoterpene alcohol. Same terpene that gives lavender its signature. Also in coriander, basil, cinnamon.
Aroma is floral, lavender, sweet, herbal.
Effects and mechanism: Calming, anti-anxiety, relaxing, sleep support. Potent modulator of GABA-A receptors, same system targeted by benzodiazepines but much weaker and without strong sedation at low doses. Also modulates glutamate NMDA receptors. Analgesic via adenosine A1 and A2A. Strongly anxiolytic in both inhalation and oral routes. One of few terpenes with direct human inhalation data for stress reduction.

Alpha-Pinene - C10H16 - Pine, Woody, Rosin
Bicyclic monoterpene. Most abundant terpene in nature. Two forms alpha and beta, alpha more common in cannabis. In pine needles, rosemary, sage.
Aroma is pine, woody, fresh, resinous.
Effects and mechanism: Alertness, focus, memory aid, anti-inflammatory. Pinene is an acetylcholinesterase inhibitor, meaning it blocks enzyme that breaks down acetylcholine, a memory neurotransmitter. This is same mechanism as rosemary for memory. May counteract some short-term memory deficits from THC via this pathway. Bronchodilator, opens airways. Anti-inflammatory via PGE1. Highly volatile, evaporates first during drying.
Found in: Pine needles, rosemary, sage, eucalyptus.
Beta-Caryophyllene - C15H24 - Pepper, Spicy, Woody
Only terpene that is also classified as a dietary cannabinoid. Sesquiterpene.
Aroma is peppery, spicy, woody, clove, black pepper.
Effects and mechanism: Anti-inflammatory, pain relief, stress relief, and direct CB2 receptor binding. Beta-caryophyllene binds CB2 as a selective agonist at ∼120-300 nM, no CB1 activity, so no intoxication. This is why black pepper can modulate cannabis effects. CB2 activation in immune cells reduces inflammatory cytokines without high. Also binds PPAR-gamma. FDA GRAS status.

Entourage Effect - Synergy, Not Myth
Entourage effect is not marketing fluff but not magic either. It is pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic synergy. Terpenes change absorption, change how THC is metabolized by CYP450 enzymes, bind to their own receptors like TRP channels, GABA-A, 5-HT1A, alpha-2 adrenergic, and CB2, and modify subjective experience. THC alone is not same as THC plus myrcene plus caryophyllene plus limonene. Dose matters: terpenes are active at 5-20mg inhaled, but many products contain less than 1mg.
Preservation education: Terpenes evaporate at 70°F-130°F, well below decarboxylation. Cure slowly at 60°F 60% RH, store in airtight glass, avoid heat. For edibles, add terpene-rich live resin or fresh frozen hash after cooking, when mixture is below 150°F, to retain volatiles.
