Defoliation Timing: 21-Day Rule Explained
Strip too early = stunted plants. Too late = larf and mold. Day 21 of flower is the sweet spot — here’s why.
Why Day 21 of Flower?
The Science
Days 0-14: Stretch phase. Plant uses fan leaves to produce energy for vertical growth. Removing leaves now = less energy = smaller plant. Auxins flow from top to bottom. Defol here stunts stretch.
Days 14-21: Stretch ends. Bud sites set. Plant transitions from vegetative hormones to flowering hormones. Energy shifts from making leaves to making flowers.
Day 21: Stretch is 95% done. Bud sites are locked in. Plant has enough stored energy in remaining leaves. Now you can remove leaves blocking light WITHOUT stunting. Plant responds by focusing all energy on exposed bud sites.
Days 22-42: Bulk phase. If you defolled day 21, light hits all bud sites. No larf. If you didn’t, lower sites stay shaded and make popcorn.
Complete Defoliation Timeline
Pre-Flip Light Defoliation
Remove bottom 20% of plant. Any branch that won’t reach canopy. Any leaf touching soil. Goal: Clean base, improve airflow. Take 10-15% of total leaves max.
Safe Plant recovers before stretch.
NO DEFOLIATION
Don’t touch it. Plant needs every leaf for stretch. Defol now = 20% yield loss.
Never Defol Stretch phase starting.
Stretch Phase - Hands Off
Plant doubles in height. Needs leaves for energy. Only remove leaves that are 50%+ yellow or blocking major bud sites. Tuck leaves instead of cutting.
High Risk Defol = stunted stretch.
Major Defoliation
Stretch is done. Remove 20-30% of leaves. All fan leaves blocking bud sites. All lower larf branches. All leaves facing inward. Goal: Every bud site gets direct light. Airflow through plant.
Safe Plant has energy stored, stretch done.
Bulk Phase - Minimal Touch
Only remove leaves that are dying, blocking multiple sites, or causing humidity pockets. 1-2 leaves per week max. Tuck instead of cut when possible.
Risk Stress = herms, foxtails.
Final Light Defoliation
Only for dense indicas. Remove last fan leaves blocking lower buds. 5-10% max. Not needed for most strains. Goal: Final light penetration before ripening.
Optional Only if canopy still dense.
NO DEFOLIATION
Plant is ripening. Any stress = reduced terps, THC degradation, herms. Leave it alone. Only remove dead leaves.
Never Defol Ripening phase.
How to Defoliate Day 21
DO: What to Remove
- Fan leaves blocking bud sites
- Leaves facing inside the plant
- Bottom 1/3 larf branches
- Leaves touching each other
- Yellow/damaged leaves >50%
- Leaves below canopy line
- Any leaf shading 2+ bud sites
DON'T: What to Keep
- Top sugar leaves on colas
- Leaves with direct light
- More than 30% total
- Healthy green leaves in canopy
- Leaves during stretch days 1-14
- Leaves after day 42
- Strip plant naked
Step-by-Step Day 21 Defol
- Wait for day 21: Count from flip day. Not pistil day. Mark your calendar.
- Water first: Defol 24hrs after watering. Never on dry plants. Stress + drought = herms.
- Start bottom: Remove all growth below canopy. If light doesn't hit it, cut it.
- Work middle: Remove large fans blocking multiple bud sites. Cut at stem, don't tear.
- Check top: Only remove if fan leaf shades 3+ bud sites. Tops need leaves.
- 20-30% rule: Step back every 5min. If you removed 1/4 to 1/3 of leaves, stop.
- Clean up: Remove all cut material. Prevents mold/pests.
- Don't feed: No nutes for 48hrs after. Let plant recover. Just water.
5 Defoliation Mistakes That Kill Yield
| Mistake | When It Happens | Damage | Yield Loss |
|---|---|---|---|
| Defol during stretch days 1-14 | Week 1-2 flower | Stunted plants, small buds | 20-30% |
| Taking >40% at once | Day 21 | Shock, herms, stalled growth | 15-25% |
| Defol late flower day 45+ | Week 7-9 | Terp loss, foxtails, herms | 10-20% |
| Removing top sugar leaves | Anytime | Buds can't photosynthesize | 10-15% |
| Defol dry plants | Anytime | Extreme stress, herms | Up to 50% |
How to Know You Took Too Much
Next day: Leaves droop, pray less. Day 3: No new growth. Day 7: Buds stopped swelling. If this happens, foliar feed kelp + reduce light 20% for 3 days. Pray.
Strain-Specific Adjustments
Dense Indicas
Examples: OG Kush, Bubba Kush, Granddaddy Purple
Adjust: Defol day 21 AND day 42. Take 30% day 21, 10% day 42. They bush hard and block light. Need airflow or PM risk.
Heavy Defol OK
Stretchy Sativas
Examples: Haze, Durban Poison, Jack Herer
Adjust: Defol day 24 instead of 21. Let stretch finish. Take 15-20% max. They don't bush as hard. Too much defol = stress herms.
Light Defol
Autoflowers
Examples: Any auto
Adjust: NO day 21 rule. Autos flip themselves. Defol very light weeks 3-4 of life. 10% max. Autos hate stress. LST + tuck > defol.
Minimal Defol
Leafy Hybrids
Examples: GG4, Cookies, Wedding Cake
Adjust: Standard day 21, but 25-35%. These make too many leaves. Need aggressive defol or you get golf ball nugs.

Defoliation FAQ
Can I defol before day 21 if it’s too bushy?
No. Tuck leaves instead. Bend branches with LST. Supercrop. Defol before day 21 costs yield. If you absolutely must, take 3-5 leaves max per week. Not 20%.
What if I missed day 21?
Do it day 24-25. Better late than never. After day 28, skip it. Risk of herms/stress outweighs benefit. Just tuck leaves and improve for next run.
Should I defol in veg?
Light defol only. Bottom leaves, damaged leaves, leaves touching soil. 5-10% max per week. Veg is for building structure. Don’t strip it.
Schwazzing vs 21-day defol?
Schwazzing = strip ALL fans day 1 + day 21. Extreme. Works for pros with dialed rooms + CO2. 21-day defol = strip 20-30% day 21 only. Safer. Start here.
Will defol cause herms?
Only if you do it wrong: during stretch, >40% at once, dry plants, or late flower. Day 21 defol done right reduces herm risk by improving airflow.
How do I know which leaves to cut?
Simple test: Look straight down at plant. If you see a bud site, good. If a fan leaf blocks it, cut the fan. If removing that fan exposes 2+ bud sites, cut it. If it only exposes stem, leave it.
