Infusion is the step where cannabinoids move from decarboxylated material into a carrier that you can cook with, and it is the step that determines how much of your estimated potency actually makes it into the finished oil. Understanding why fat matters, how temperature controls movement of cannabinoids, and how straining and handling affect loss will make your batches more consistent from batch to batch.


Cannabinoids such as THC and CBD are lipophilic, which means they bind to fat rather than water. This property is why oil and butter have been used traditionally for edible preparation. The fat percentage of your carrier affects how much it can hold. MCT oil and refined coconut oil are commonly reported as close to 100 percent fat. Butter is commonly reported as about 80 percent fat because it contains water and milk solids. Ghee or clarified butter is commonly reported as higher in fat than whole butter because much of the water has been removed. Olive oil is also commonly reported as close to 100 percent fat, but it has a stronger flavor and a lower smoke point than MCT oil, which can affect cooking applications. Choosing a carrier with a higher fat percentage does not automatically increase potency, but it can improve the efficiency of the transfer and reduce separation during storage.


Temperature during infusion controls two competing processes. Moderate heat helps cannabinoids move into fat more quickly by increasing molecular motion, but excessive heat can degrade THC to CBN and can cause volatile aromatic compounds to evaporate. CBN is commonly described in horticulture literature as being associated with more sedating effects. Many educational resources report a commonly used infusion range of 160 degrees Fahrenheit to 180 degrees Fahrenheit, which is about 71 degrees Celsius to 82 degrees Celsius, for 2 to 3 hours with occasional gentle stirring. Temperatures sustained above 200 degrees Fahrenheit, which is about 93 degrees Celsius, are commonly reported to increase the risk of degradation and off flavors. Using a calibrated digital thermometer, as shown in the photo, is more reliable than relying on a stove dial, because many home stoves vary by 10 to 25 degrees Fahrenheit. Preheat your oil to the target range, verify with the thermometer, and log the reading at the start and at intervals during the process.


Grind size affects surface area and therefore infusion efficiency. A coarse, even grind exposes more surface area than large pieces, but an overly fine powder can be difficult to strain and can increase sediment in the finished oil. Sediment does not necessarily mean more potency, and it can make dosing less uniform if particles settle. A consistent medium coarse grind, similar to coarse breadcrumbs, is commonly reported to balance extraction and ease of straining. Whatever grind you choose, keep it consistent between batches and log it so you can compare results.


Time and agitation also influence efficiency. Cannabinoids do not instantly move into fat. Time allows for diffusion. Gentle stirring every 15 to 20 minutes is commonly reported to help maintain even temperature and prevent material from sitting on the bottom where it may be exposed to higher direct heat. Avoid vigorous boiling or high heat stirring, which can introduce air and accelerate oxidation. Oxidation over time can also contribute to conversion of THC to CBN.


Straining is where measurable loss often occurs. Plant material acts like a sponge and retains oil after infusion. Pressing very hard can force more oil out, but it can also force more fine particles and chlorophyll into the oil, which can affect flavor and texture. A commonly reported method is to pour through a fine mesh stainless steel strainer lined with cheesecloth, allow to drain by gravity for several minutes, then gently press the remaining material with the back of a spoon to recover additional oil without excessive force. Weigh or measure the volume of oil before and after straining and log the difference. For example, if you start with 500 milliliters and recover 380 milliliters, you can calculate a recovery percentage and use that to estimate per serving potency more accurately.


Filtering for clarity is optional. Some makers filter a second time through a clean cheesecloth or a fine mesh strainer to reduce sediment. Each filtration step can cause small additional loss, so log whether you single strained or double strained. If you are making a savory oil, such as garlic chili oil shown in the photo as an example of a well documented infusion process, the same principles apply for maintaining temperature, logging time, and straining for consistency.


Dosing math after infusion remains an estimate unless you have laboratory testing. Laboratory reports commonly calculate total potential THC using the formula total THC equals THC plus THCA multiplied by 0.877. The 0.877 factor accounts for the weight lost as carbon dioxide when THCA converts to THC during decarboxylation. For infusion, a common educational estimate is grams of material multiplied by THCA percentage as a decimal multiplied by 1000 multiplied by 0.877 equals milligrams of potential THC before infusion loss. You can then multiply by an estimated infusion efficiency factor and divide by final recovered volume to estimate milligrams per milliliter, then multiply by milliliters used per serving. For example, if you estimate 350 milligrams potential before loss and recover 350 milliliters, the estimate is about 1 milligram per milliliter before accounting for loss. Because efficiency at home is difficult to measure without testing, this remains an estimate. Only laboratory testing can confirm actual milligrams per serving.


Storage affects stability after infusion. THC can degrade to CBN with exposure to light, heat, and oxygen. To slow this, store infused oil in an opaque, airtight, child resistant container in a cool dark place with minimal headspace. Label with batch number, date made, carrier type, estimated milligrams per serving if calculated, and a full ingredient list including common allergens. Keep containers locked and out of reach of children and pets.


Documentation is the most reliable way to improve consistency. Maintain a detailed infusion log, as shown in the photo, that includes date, batch number, carrier type and amount, starting material amount and grind description, decarboxylation time and temperature verified by thermometer, infusion time and temperature readings at intervals, straining method, starting and recovered volume, and sensory notes such as color, aroma, and clarity. Over several batches, this log will show which variables correlate with better recovery and more consistent results.
