Cannabinoid Spotlight: CBC — The Quiet Team Player
CBC (cannabichromene) is the cannabinoid equivalent of the bassist who never does interviews. It's the third most common cannabinoid in the plant, it's non-intoxicating, and it does something genuinely interesting: it doesn't bind CB1/CB2 strongly, but it inhibits the breakdown of anandamide — your body's own "bliss molecule." In other words, CBC doesn't knock on the door; it keeps your own keys in the lock longer.
🧬 What CBC Is
CBC is non-intoxicating and abundant — most flower has more CBC than CBG, but nobody talks about it because it doesn't get you high and doesn't have a catchy nickname. Early research (preclinical, mostly) has looked at CBC for inflammation, neurogenesis, and acne. The anandamide angle is the most interesting: by inhibiting FAAH (the enzyme that breaks down anandamide), CBC may extend the life of your endocannabinoids — a subtle, supportive mechanism rather than a direct hit.
For the kitchen, CBC's appeal is practical: it's already in your flower, it's non-intoxicating, and it plays well with others. You don't need to seek it out — you need to stop destroying it. CBC, like most cannabinoids, degrades with excessive heat and light. Gentle infusion preserves it; aggressive processing doesn't.
🔥 The Infusion: Full-Spectrum Gentle Butter (CBC-Preserving Method)
The goal: maximum cannabinoid retention, including CBC.
- Decarb: 2g quality flower, sealed mason jar, 230°F (110°C) for 45 minutes. Slightly lower and slower than standard — you're protecting the minor cannabinoids.
- Method: Combine with 1/2 cup (115g) unsalted butter in a double boiler at 150°F (65°C) — no higher — for 2.5 hours. Low and slow. Strain through cheesecloth without squeezing (squeezing adds chlorophyll, not cannabinoids).
- Dosing math: 2g at 20% THC = 400mg THCA × 0.877 = ~351mg THC × 0.75 efficiency (gentler = slightly less efficient) ≈ ~260mg per 115g → ~2.3mg per gram. The CBC content is unknown but preserved — that's the win.
- Yield: ~100g. Storage: Refrigerated 8 weeks, frozen 6 months. Label: "FULL-SPECTRUM — gentle method."
🧇 Demo Recipe: Brown Butter Waffles with CBC Butter (~11mg/serving)
Makes 8 waffles (serves 4, 2 each)
- 2 cups flour; 2 tbsp sugar; 1 tbsp baking powder; 1/2 tsp salt
- 2 eggs; 1.5 cups milk; 1 tsp vanilla
- 4 tbsp CBC-preserving butter, melted (measured — this is the dose)
- 2 tbsp clean butter (for the iron)
Method: Whisk dry, whisk wet, combine. The dosed butter goes in the batter — waffle irons run ~375°F but the batter interior stays below 250°F, and the cook is fast (4 minutes). CBC survives this just fine. 4 tbsp (~60g) ≈ 138mg total → ~17mg per 2-waffle serving (THC; CBC rides along). For ~8mg, use 2 tbsp dosed + 2 tbsp clean.
Serve with berries and maple syrup. The brown butter notes (if you browned half the dosed butter first — optional, recommended) make this taste like a restaurant brunch.
📐 Dosing Math
- CBC-preserving butter ≈ 2.3mg/g → 1 tbsp (~15g) ≈ 34mg — that's a lot; measure carefully
- Demo waffles at 4 tbsp ≈ 17mg per serving — halve for beginners
- The CBC is a bonus, not the dose — always do THC math, let the minors ride along
🧬 Terpene & Cannabinoid Pairing
- Primary: CBC (quiet, supportive, the anandamide extender)
- Supporting: The full terpene profile of your flower — this method preserves everything, so use flower you'd want to taste
- How to use it: CBC is an entourage player. Don't isolate it — preserve it. Gentle heat, full flower, real butter. The waffle is just the delivery vehicle.
🌱 Strain Suggestions (CBC-rich enough to matter:)
- Charlotte's Web (Hemp, high CBD) — Meaningful CBC alongside the CBD. The entourage poster child.
- Harlequin (Sativa, ~8% THC, high CBD) — Balanced, CBC-present. Functional waffles.
- Sour Tsunami (Hybrid, ~10% THC, high CBD) — One of the first CBD-bred cultivars; solid CBC content.
📏 Dosage
- Per serving (2 waffles): ~17mg THC + preserved CBC
- Onset: 45–90 minutes — butter and waffles are a medium-speed carrier
- First-timer rule: One waffle, 90 minutes. They taste like brunch, not medicine — which is why you count.
For adults 21+ only. Consume responsibly and in accordance with local laws.
🧇 Chef Smoke's CBC Rule: "CBC doesn't want the spotlight. It's the friend who holds your hair back and never mentions it again. You don't cook FOR CBC — you cook GENTLY so CBC survives. Low heat, real butter, full flower. The entourage isn't a marketing term; it's a cooking method."
