Most infusion recipes are written for a crowd: a cup of butter, a whole pan, a dozen cookies. But most weeknights are not a crowd — they are one person, one pan, one plate, and a butter dish that should not have to feed twelve to be worth making. Cooking for one is not cooking for two with the leftovers thrown away. It is a different technique: a small-batch infusion, a dilution jar that turns strong butter into single-serve butter, and three single-plate applications that never ask you to scale a recipe down in your head at 7 p.m.
🔥 Decarboxylation: Wake the Flower Up First
Raw flower will not do the job — the THC is still wearing its acid jacket as THCA, and heat is what takes it off. So before anything gets infused, the flower gets activated:
- Decarb: 1g flower, broken up by hand (never ground to dust), spread on a small parchment-lined ramekin or sheet pan, covered tightly with foil, baked at 240°F for 40 minutes. Cool completely before opening the foil — the good stuff is in the trapped vapor, and you want it in the jar, not in the kitchen air. A small batch cools fast, so do not rush the foil.
- Why 240°F for 40 minutes: This is the house standard — hot enough to convert THCA to THC reliably, gentle enough to keep the terpene character from boiling off. Small batches do not need a shorter decarb; they need the same temperature and the same patience, just a smaller pan.
🧈 The Infusion: Small-Batch Butter, Then the Dilution Jar
Two steps, and the second one is the whole technique:
- Method (small batch): Melt 2 tablespoons unsalted butter with the decarbed 1g flower in a small saucepan or double boiler, hold at 160–180°F for 2 hours, stirring occasionally. Strain through cheesecloth, squeeze gently, and jar.
- Base: Unsalted butter. Temp: 160–180°F. Time: 2 hours. Yield: About 2 tablespoons of strong butter.
- Dosing math (strong butter): 1g at 20% THC = 1000mg × 0.20 = 200mg THCA × 0.877 = ~175mg THC × 0.75 efficiency ≈ ~131mg THC per 2 tablespoons → ~65mg per tablespoon, ~22mg per teaspoon. That is far too strong to spoon straight onto one plate — which is why the dilution jar exists.
- The dilution jar (the technique): Melt the 2 tablespoons of strong butter with 6 tablespoons of plain butter and stir until fully combined. You now have 8 tablespoons of single-serve butter at ~16mg per tablespoon, ~5mg per teaspoon. One teaspoon is one gentle serving. Label the jar: strain, date, mg per teaspoon. Keep it far away from the undosed butter.
- Storage: Fridge 4 weeks, freezer 6 months. The dilution jar is the only butter that comes out for a single-serve dinner — the strong butter stays in the back of the fridge, labeled, untouched.
🍽️ The Technique: Three Single Plates, One Teaspoon Each
The teaspoon is the dosing instrument — one plate, one teaspoon, one number:
1. The single-serve ramekin:
- Butter a ramekin with plain butter, fill it with one serving of macaroni, gratin, or baked eggs, and dot exactly 1 teaspoon of single-serve butter over the top before it goes in the oven. The ramekin is the portion — there is no second helping to argue about.
2. The one-pan finish:
- Cook dinner completely clean — one chicken thigh, one salmon fillet, one pile of roasted vegetables — and melt 1 teaspoon of single-serve butter over the finished plate, off the heat. The pan stays clean, the plate carries the count, and the next night's dinner starts from a clean pan again.
3. The single mug:
- Stir 1 teaspoon of single-serve butter into one mug of soup, cocoa, or golden milk, off the boil. A mug is a portion with a handle — it does not get refilled from a dosed pot, because there is no dosed pot.
Method:
- Decarb small, infuse small, dilute once. Make the strong butter, dilute it into the jar, and write the number on the jar before it goes in the fridge.
- Cook clean, dose at the plate. Nothing in a single-serve kitchen gets dosed in the pan — the dose meets the finished plate, by the teaspoon, every time.
- One plate, one teaspoon, one label. If a guest joins you, their plate gets plain butter first, before the dilution jar comes out. The jar gets labeled before it leaves the fridge, every time.
📐 Dosing Math
- Strong butter: 2 tablespoons ≈ 131mg THC total
- Dilution jar: 8 tablespoons ≈ 131mg THC total → ~16mg per tablespoon, ~5mg per teaspoon
- Per single plate: 1 teaspoon ≈ ~5mg THC — the sane starting point, by design
- Two teaspoons → ~10mg — a full serving, measured, not guessed
- The jar is the scale. If you spoon straight from the strong butter, you dose four times what you meant — so the strong butter never meets a plate directly.
🧬 Terpene Pairing
- Primary terpenes: Choose by the plate, not by the jar — limonene (bright, for a citrus or herb finish), linalool (soft and floral, for a cocoa or golden milk mug), myrcene (warm and savory, for a roasted-vegetable or chicken plate)
- How to use it: The dilution jar makes the strain choice low-stakes: at one teaspoon per plate, the strain's flavor is a whisper, not a shout. Pick the strain that suits tonight's dinner, not the strain that suits a whole batch.
- What to avoid: Strong diesel or skunk strains in a single-serve butter — at small scale there is nowhere for the flavor to hide, and one plate has no other flavors to argue with. Keep it gentle, and let the dinner lead.
🌱 Strain Suggestions
- Harlequin (Sativa-dominant, ~7% THC / ~9% CBD) — Myrcene, pinene. A balanced, gentle companion — the single-serve starter strain.
- ACDC (Sativa-dominant, ~1% THC / ~14% CBD) — Myrcene, pinene. Mostly CBD calm — for a mug that should soothe, not soar.
- Blue Dream (Hybrid, ~19% THC) — Myrcene, pinene. Gentle herbal warmth — the all-purpose single-plate companion, diluted down to a teaspoon.
📏 Dosage
- Per plate or mug: ~5mg THC — a gentle, single serving; respect it
- Two teaspoons: ~10mg — a full serving, measured
- Onset: 60–90 minutes — the butter absorbs steadily, and the single plate carries it long
- The gentle rule: One plate, one teaspoon, one label. The strong butter never meets a plate directly, the pan stays clean, and the dilution jar is the only butter that comes out for dinner.
Start with one serving. Wait 90 minutes before even thinking about a second. For adults 21+ only. Consume responsibly and in accordance with local laws.
🍽️ Chef Smoke's Cooking-for-One Rule: "A crowd recipe divided by twelve is a guess. A dilution jar divided by the teaspoon is a dose. Decarb small, dilute once, cook clean, dose at the plate — and let the teaspoon do the only job that matters: carry the count where everyone can see it, one plate at a time."
